Late Night Rescue on the Ozark Highland

Monday Oct 16, 2023
Welcome back to Wayward Stories!
This week we’re going to talk about a very recent rescue our team effected in the backcountry on the Ozark Highland Trail. A hiker had a mishap and was unable to self-rescue, and we, along with other responding agencies, were able to execute a successful extraction. We’re telling this story tonight because you guys always seem to love the Search and Rescue episodes, and there’s always value in learning about the process for any outdoors-person that spends time out in the field. Altogether it was a very interesting case, and makes for for some great listening! Tune in tonight to hear how it all went down!

Riding the Rails through the Ozark Mountains
Sunday Oct 01, 2023
Sunday Oct 01, 2023
Welcome back to Wayward Stories! This week, we explore my recent opportunity to ride a passenger excursion train on a 150-mile round trip through the gorgeous Boston Mountains of Northwest Arkansas. It’s a full day ride featuring trestles that tower 125 feet about the valley floor, a 1702’ long tunnel on the highest railway pass between the Apps and the Rockies, and follows along Frog Bayou for the majority of the trip, one of our crystal clear Ozark Mountain creeks!
If there’s anything that captures that free-roaming spirit vibe and rekindles the nomad within us, it’s gotta be riding the rails. Given the current state of affairs in the world, it has me seriously considering becoming a hobo…
oh and also I maybe divulge some possibly incriminating stories from my youth involving trains 🤷🏻♂️
Tune in this week to come along for the ride!

Robber’s Cave State Park ~ Oklahoma
Monday Aug 07, 2023
Monday Aug 07, 2023
Welcome back to Wayward Stories!
After a dark week catalyzed by an egomaniacal geology professor with a penchant for sadism, we’re back with a brand new episode about one of Oklahoma’s best state parks! Robber’s Cave State Park is an area deep in the San Bòis Mountains of SE Oklahoma filled with tales of famous outlaws and the loot they buried….and your humble host has some personal experiences to share that might just validate some of those claims 😬😬😬
Aside from the allure of buried treasure and legends of old, Robber’s Cave SP has a veritable smorgasbord of outdoor activities for you to enjoy! Camping, hiking, biking, kayaking, fishing, climbing, repelling, horse riding….if you can name it, Robber’s Cave has it.
Tune in tonight to hear all about it!

Tuesday Jul 11, 2023
Tuesday Jul 11, 2023
Welcome back to Wayward Stories!
This week we head back out to Cali to dream another dream. In this installment of the California Dreamin’ series we explore some beautiful Santa Clara County Parks located in the redwoods of the Santa Cruz Mountains and take a little day trip east into Yosemite. It is true that things cost 4x as much in Cali…but I would counter that things are also 4x as beautiful in Cali. Break out your bucket list and get ready to take some notes. Waterfalls and Redwood forests await!

In the second half, we talk about one of Arkansas’ best state parks, Devil’s Den. Devil’s Den has beautiful hikes, swimming, fishing, photography opportunities and first class mountain bike trails! Listen in tonight to learn about all it has to offer, and hear some of my own tales of exploring Devil’s Den over the years.

CLASSIC: Exploring Central Colorado
Tuesday Jun 13, 2023
Tuesday Jun 13, 2023
Welcome back to Wayward Stories!
Rather than have a couple of dark weeks due to an exciting opportunity I must seize upon, I’ve chose to drop another classic episode. Listen y’all…this weekend I get to go do archeology! Lifelong dream!
But I promise you, for all of you who haven’t listened to the entire back catalogue…you WILL enjoy this classic. IMO it’s possibly the very best early episode I produced, and it is chock-full of interesting tales of exploring abandoned gold and silver mines and Colorado’s best preserved ghost town.
I hope you will all forgive me for not having the time to drop a fresh show, and I thank you all for your understanding…did I mention I’m going to do ARCHEOLOGY????

Route 66 through the Missouri Ozarks
Tuesday May 30, 2023
Tuesday May 30, 2023
Welcome back to Wayward Stories!
After spending the last week maligned with Satan’s head cold, aka Covid-19, our Memorial Day weekend was looking pretty bleak. But with a slight upturn in health, and the reality of a 3 day weekend being wasted a real possibility …decisions were made. Roadtrips were had. And Missouri’s section of historic Route 66 was discovered. In addition to exploring several dozen miles of original 66 and Ha Ha Tonka State Park, much fun was had and at least some amount of Covid was overcome.
Join me this week to hear all about our adventure!

This show is my passion project, born of a traumatic set of circumstances that jarred me from a sedentary life and an apocalyptic worldview. With my jarring wake up call came a clean slate...both in my physical world, but also my mental and emotional world. Wayward Stories is my humble attempt to add value to this world through sharing my story...my journey...with the intent of prompting others to take their lives back into their own hands. My goals are simple:
1- Demonstrate to others who have experienced trauma that good CAN exist on the other side of bad...so don't give up.
2- Offer proof-of-concept that an exciting life full of adventure and self-expansion can be had by the everyday Joe like me...with an everyday job, and everyday budget and an everyday life.
